Handmade Mouldings

Prime cuts

I go to great lengths to find the best in a piece of wood, whether it's the figured grain of plain sawn planks or the long striped grain of quarter sawn wood.
Box frames are a simple and timeless design that offer all sorts of variety in presentation.
A little can say a lot, but we don't want to detract from the artwork. Each different timber sets a different tone and feel to a piece.
Plywood frame
Plywood

High grade maple plywood, with perfect right angles at each corner is a very stylish and effective frame. Regularly used in furniture and kitchens, there's great satisfaction in the linear edge of this man made sheet material.
Mahogany Frame
Mahogany

I first fell in love with this wood working with acoustic guitars. Sadly, Swietenia macrophylla is an endangered wood due to it's over use. It's is on the CITES Apendix II list, so you'll need to declare it if you go abroad! It has been so over used that there are plenty of discarded planks hiding in old furniture and car boots. You've just got to keep your eyes peeled for when it comes available.
Oak Frame
Oak

A mainstay of woodworking throughout the centuries. It's a very important wood that would be very upsetting if we let anything happen to our stocks of oak. I usually find sawmill off-cuts that have been kiln dried. A very hard wood to cut but so light and clean in appearance.
Sapele Frame
Sapele

Less grained than Teak and much harder than Mahogany, I really love this wood. Unfinished it has an understated matt finish but polished up the colour can be wonderfully deep and red.
